Mr. Abkey was called to the Québec Bar in 2006. His practice mainly focuses on the areas of merges and acquisitions, mining law and environmental law.
Before starting his own firm, Abkey Avocat inc, Mr. Abkey was practicing in the mining, energy and environment sector in two major international law firms.
He has previously worked as a legal and policy advisor to several Quebec government ministers including Minister of Justice, Minister of Sustainable development, Environment and Parks as well as Vice-premier and Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports for almost 6 years.
During his tenure as an advisor to Ministers and Vice-Premier, Mr. Abkey was responsible for the North Plan project of the government of Quebec; where he took part in negotiations concerning the North Plan, the proposed Mining Act and Proposed Environment Act as well as negotiations concerning the purchase of territory for protection purposes. During his role as legal and policy advisor to the Minister of Sustainable development, Environment and Parks, Mr. Abkey negotiated with various environmental groups and made recommendations to the Minister regarding protected areas, projects to be authorised, intergovernmental affairs and relations with First Nations.
He was also the designated liaison officer for the Bureau d’Audience Publique sur l’Environnement (BAPE) and all legal questions related to its proceedings.
